The current COVID-19 crisis has many pet owners asking how to keep dogs entertained while quarantined. If you have one or more dogs in quarantine with you, read this article to learn how to keep your pet busy.
Take Extra Walks
Taking a walk around the neighborhood is still possible for many of us. This is probably one of the few activities you can do outside of your house right now, so why not take your pooch on multiple walks each day? Just be sure not to push your dog beyond what he or she can handle.
Practice Obedience Training
Getting your dog’s mind working is more tiresome than physical activity for most canines. Exercise your dog’s brain by reviewing basic commands, like sit, stay, down, and come.
You can also start training your dog to obey new commands, like shake hands, roll over, and speak. Limit each training session to 20 minutes so that your dog doesn’t lose interest. Sign up here to join In Pups We Trust Free Dog Training Course.
Give Your Dog New Toys
If you are working from home, you need to know how to keep dogs entertained so that you can focus on your job.
Puzzle games that require problem-solving skills are the perfect solution. They will keep your furry friend busy for a while. A new luxury fuzzy toy will keep your pup searching for the squeaker for hours.
Kongs that are stuffed with tasty treats are also great for dogs in quarantine. Some treat ideas include:
- Yogurt
- Canned pumpkin
- Peanut butter
- Cottage cheese
- Dog kibble
If you don’t want to spend money on new dog toys, you can make your own out of items around your house. Got an old T-shirt you don’t wear anymore? Turn it into a chew toy by cutting it into strips and braiding it.
You could also give your dog an empty cardboard box to chew on. Or poke holes into a water bottle filled with dog treats.
There are tons of homemade dog toy ideas out there. Just make sure that the toys you make are canine-safe.
Play Indoor Games
Being stuck in your home can make the time drag by. Break up the day by playing hide and go seek with your pup.
Try hiding a toy or treat and encourage your dog to find it. Alternatively, find a hiding spot for yourself and have your dog find you. Whichever way you play, you and your dog and will have loads of fun!
Snuggle Up with Your Dog
Make the best of being trapped at home by spending a little extra bonding time with your four-legged friend. Curl up on the couch with your canine and take a nap, or read a good book while your dog rests in your lap.
Those relaxing activities will strengthen your bond with your pet while also reducing the stress caused by COVID-19. Stress weakens the immune system, which increases the odds of you or your dog getting sick. That’s why it’s important to destress with your pet.
Although it might not be easy to have dogs in quarantine, you can get through it. And you can even enjoy spending some extra time with your beloved pet.
